The portable ultrasonic flow meter is the most commonly used model due to its versatility. It accommodates pipe sizes ranging from as small as three-quarters inch in diameter to as large as twenty-four inches. This meter includes transducer sets that are securely strapped to the exterior of the pipe. One transducer generates a signal that travels through the pipe, reflecting off the pipe wall and returning to the receiver transducer. The flow rate is calculated using the previously mentioned parameters, and the result is displayed in units such as Gallons per Minute, Gallons per Second, Liters per Minute, or Liters per Second. The portable unit is equipped with a carrying case, display module, transducers, Velcro or metal straps, ultrasonic gel, and a tape measure for ease of use.
The fixed installation ultrasonic flow meter shares similar concepts and measurement methods with the portable version, but is designed for permanent installation. The display unit and transducers are meant to be installed at a fixed location, and the display unit is larger and more robust than that of the portable model. Like the portable unit, the fixed installation model can measure water flow in pipes with a range of diameters.
Ultrasonic flow meter clamp-on devices are designed for use on a single, specific pipe diameter. As their name suggests, these devices are clamped onto the pipe for measurement. Compact and easy to use, these devices are ideal for specific applications but only work for the pipe diameter they are designed for.
